Somerville was settled in colonial times primarily by the Dutch who purchased land from the English proprietors of the colony. The Dutch established their church near what is today Somerville and a Dutch Reformed minister or Domine lived at the Old Dutch Parsonage from about 1754. The early village grew up around a church, courthouse and a tavern built at a crossroads shortly after the American Revolution. No one knows who gave Somerville its name, but it was known by this name by about 1800. Somerville was originally a sparsely populated farming community, but rapidly grew after the completion of the railroad in the 1840s and development of water power along the Raritan River in the 1850s.
Somerville celebrated it's 100th Centennial Anniversary in 2009.
Somerville offers a wide variety of fantastic restaurants, many with outdoor seating. Warm weather brings out the weekly Friday night antque car show and Memorial Day is the Tour of Somerville Race; the annual professional bicycle race. Known as ‘The Kentucky Derby of Cycling,’ the Tour is the longest running major cycling competition in the United States and is part of the USA Cycling’s National Race Calendar, which is the nation’s premier Pro-Am men’s and women’s road cycling circuit.

Somerville saw some great activity in the Real Estate market this past year. While the number of homes sold for the year down 3.1% vs. 2015; the average sales price is up 10.9% due to a lack of inventory. Overall we saw a very strong Spring Market with about three (3) months of multiple-offers on homes resulting in homes selling above asking price.
The Fall market continued strong with homes selling when they were priced correctly. A slowdown began around November, which is expected given the holiday season.
2017 promises a steady real estate market and w should see homes increase slightly in price but nothing too outrageous.
